Admission, discharge nurse’s good eye earns Good Catch
Kelli Ferrell, an admission and discharge nurse on 4Wiser, received a Good Catch Award from the Patient Quality and Safety Group for discovering an overlooked order regarding changing a patient’s wound VAC.
In July, Ferrell began making follow-up calls to patients after discharge. During the last six months, she has identified numerous patient concerns, such as care questions, follow-up appointment issues, prescriptions inquiries and home health queries.
Had she not noticed the order, the patient likely would have had to wait two additional weeks before having the wound FAV changed.
Developed during the 100-day Workout, the Good Catch Award recognizes UMMC employees who have discovered potential events before patients are harmed. Risk Management identifies these events through I-CARE reports.
To report events, call Risk Management at 5-1994. For more information about the award, email Elizabeth Smith at esmith5@umc.edu or Elizabeth Toony at etoony@umc.edu.
Dermatology department makes major SKINPACT
The Department of Dermatology received a 2018 SKINPACT award for its project, “Using Telemedicine to Extend the Reach of Dermatology into the Mississippi Delta.”
Sponsored by pharmaceutical company Galderma, the SPINPACT awards recognize and encourage excellence in initiatives that help improve skin health for communities worldwide.
UMMC Dermatology won in the Community Leadership Category – Community Vote and will receive a $10,000 prize. Its winning project supplied dermatology equipment to the Jackson Free Clinic and started two clinics in the Mississippi Delta: one at a school and another in an urgent care facility. Combined, these clinics see about 50 patients per month.
Dr. Robert Brodell, professor and chair of dermatology, led the project team. Other team members include professors Dr. Stephen Helms, Dr. Nancye McCowan and Dr. Kim Ward; associate professors Dr. William Black and Dr. Jeremy Jackson; assistant professors Dr. Ashley Emerson, Dr. Jasmine Hollinger and Dr. Julie Wyatt; and nurse practitioners Angela Jackson and Leslie Partridge.
